Frequently Asked Questions 

When fixing MgO Boards what grade of fixings are required? Stainless Steel 316 Grade (non-corrosive, self tapping and countersunk)  
What is the minimum distance required to the edge of the boards? 13mm-16mm around the perimeter and 50mm on the corners at max centres of 200mm 
What gap should be left between the boards when fixing? A 3mm gap should be left between the boards which can be filled using a flexible external grade filler 
If applying paint how many coats are suggested? For best results an Acrylic Primer should be used, then further topcoats of Acrylic Paint 
Can the boards be used as a substitute for HD Cement Board such as Hardie Backer? Modelpan MgO boards are lighter, easier to cut, mould proof and are non toxic, and can be used in all wet applications such as tiling, soffits or even as a render carrier board 
In the building of studwalls what level of sound protection is required to comply with building regulations? As standard (up to 50dB) our board offers double the levels of traditional acoustic plasterboard so only one board is required; this in itself adds to the required passive fire protection without any additional plastering 
If installing the boards in an enviroment that requires impact resistance such as schools and hospitals; will we require more than one board? No. In fact, our board offers a real multipurpose solution and can completely remove the need for multiple trades and various different types of building boards. A direct replacement for plasterboard, cement board, ply or OSB 
When building a traditional timber framed house can we use the Modelpan MgO as an external skin and replace the OSB3? Yes, not only does our board offer a "breathable" outer fabric, but also superior racking strength as well as a built-in passive fire retardant, which is now part of the new fire regulations (spread of fire during construction)  
Has MgO board been used in large scale construction projects? Yes, in fact MgO was the "Official"construction specified material of the 2008 Olympic Games and was used extensively inside and outside of one of the worlds tallest and "Greenest" buildings, Taipei 101. Modelpan is one of the only MgO manufacturers to be GreenGuard Certified Gold allowing for use in Schools and Hospitals. MgO is also used in the manufacture of SIP panels with the outside face being ready to receive final finishes almost immediately  
If using the Modelpan MgO board as a render carrier board, what product is best fit for purpose? We would recommend a single coat silicone based render with compatible primer, such as Ecorend  
Are all MgO boards the same? No, like with most products that are manufactured, there are differences in mixes and blends as well as the layers of re-enforced mesh that make-up the boards. Modelpan MgO boards are manufactured under ASTM, ISO9001, CE, EOTA certifications ensuring the best quality product at all times
